Welcome to the Special Education Department!
The Special Education Department at Bayview Secondary School provides identified students with a variety of services to support them through secondary school. Our goal is to foster students’ abilities to become independent and self-advocating lifelong learners.
Bayview Secondary School offers a variety of programs to support exceptional learners:
Autism Class:
This in a non-credit functional life stills program designed to provide programming for students identified with autism. Students work towards goals as outlined in their IEP (Individual Education Plan).
ASD Program Support for OSSD:
This program is for students identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder who are working towards obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. This ASD program provides a structured setting which focusses on social skills, self-regulation skills, communication, advocacy, problem solving and learning skills. Students are additionally provided with support in their other classes. This is a two-year program for students in grades 9 and 10.
Learning Strategies:
Grades 9 and 10 (GLE10 and GLE20)
These courses focus on learning strategies to help students become better, more independent learners. Students will learn how to develop and apply literacy and numeracy skills, personal management skills, interpersonal and teamwork skills to improve achievement in school, the workplace and the community. These courses help student build confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school and beyond. Literacy skills is an intensive focus in both courses.
Grades 11 and 12: (GLE30 and GLE40)
These courses improve students’ learning and personal management skills, preparing them to make successful transitions to work, training and/or post-secondary education destinations. Students will access their learning abilities and use literacy, numeracy, research and personal management techniques to maximize their learning. Students will investigate trends and resources to support their post-secondary education choices, employment and/or training and develop and plan to meet their individual goals.

Levels of Service (Placements)
Placement is determined annually though the IPRC (Identification, Placement and Review Committee) process. The following levels of service are available:
1. Withdrawal Assistance
Withdrawal assistance students will take a credit in a Learning Strategies course. This provides daily contact in one semester with the resource teacher. In addition, the resource teacher will monitor the student throughout the year and provide consultation support to the classroom teachers.
2. Regular Class with Resource Support
Resource support is provided in the classroom by the special education resource teacher on a regular basis. Instructional interventions and accommodations are provided and continually assessed and evaluated by the classroom teacher.
3. Regular Class with Indirect Service
Regular class with indirect service is provided to students who are placed in the regular classroom. The special education resource teacher in consultation with the classroom teacher monitors the student’s progress and makes program adjustments.
4. Partially Self-Contained
Students receive direct instruction in a special education classroom for more than 51% of the school day.

Future Careers:
The special education department supports all post-secondary and post-21 pathways. We support students in any pathway, including supported living, university, apprenticeship, college, and work. As of September 2014, all identified students will have an annual transition plan supporting their post-secondary transition.
