Personalized Alternative Education

Welcome to Personalized Alternative Education at Bayview Secondary School

The PAE Programs at Bayview S.S are specifically designed to meet the needs of the students in our school community.  We have a uniquely designed classroom set up to support both the academic and social-emotional needs of of students. PAE uses unconventional classroom settings and altered timetables in order to service the needs of each student. Our programs run on a continuous intake process  We are home to a variety of uniquely designed programs including:

  • Semestered In-Class

  • Credit Recovery In-Class

  • ALEP (Work based program)

  • Supervised Alternative Learning (SAL)

These programs often appeal to or are referred to students who:

  • Have trouble learning in a traditional classroom setting
  • Are academically in risk
  • Would benefit from a smaller class size
  • Want to combine classroom learning with workplace learning

About:

We are a program designed at meeting the needs of the individual student.  We will support a variety of students in the building including those that are credit deficient, students recovering previously taken courses, have medical or mental health accommodations, etc.

Our program runs individual courses through the Google Classroom platform.  Depending on the student the structure and delivery of the course will change from person to person.  We will continuously evolve our programming to meet the needs of our students.

The Personalized Alternative Education Program at Bayview Secondary School offers a variety of programming including; Semestered In-class Instruction, Community Based Education (ALEP), and Credit Recovery.

Semestered In-Class Instruction

We run both compulsory and elective courses for students through a digital platform.  Students work independently through the course material.  Course work is tailored to meet the needs of the individual student.  We provided flexibility in timetabling by offering both full PAE timetables as well as hybrid options with traditionally run courses.

ALEP

This is an Alternative Learning Program where students can earn cooperative education credits through their employment (part-time or full-time).  These credits can be combined with course work on a compulsory credit where the student comes to class 1 day per week.

Credit Recovery

Credit recovery is offered to students that have previously been unsuccessful in a course.  This provides students an opportunity to complete missing course work or improve their understanding of the course content.  Upon completion of this work the student will earn the credit.  This can be completed in a short time period or can take the length of the semester depending on the individual students situation.

Current Students:

Do you have a job?      *Credit Opportunity*

If you have a part time job (or you are actively looking for one) ALEP might be for you.  This is a way to earn credits through your work experience (similar to co-op except you are employed).  Take a look at the following link to see if your job meets the criteria and/or talk to your PAE teacher for more information.

Pathway Planning

Throughout the semester we will work through different workshops directed at pathway planning.  Follow the link above to find out more information or to review some of the resources that we will look at throughout the semester.

Opportunities

As students progress through their compulsory and elective credits a great deal of time is spent on trying to identify career paths.  The Individual Pathway Plan facilitates this bi-annually but we also spend time in group discussions examining interests, skills and required courses to meet the desired goal.

Ultimately we will look at opportunities for the students to explore their interests in research with the possibility that in the Bayview Alternative Learning Experience Program, (B.A.L.E.P).  or the Co-op department they can get a placement for working in their field.

There are the Exploring Opportunities Program, (E.O.P.), that focus on automobiles and construction located in schools close to Bayview and this is also a possibility for a "Next Step" progression.

For those students who are almost completed their diploma there is also the Dual-Credit Program. This allows students to experience college level courses, earn college level credits as well as credits towards their remaining high school credit requirements.

Ultimately we are aiming at providing students with the chance of identifying a Pathway that intrinsically motivates them to pursue graduation from high school and beyond.  These students will be an example of life-long learners who are realizing their potential by combining their interests, skill sets and pursuing a career path which allows these various factors to combine and produce engaged and fulfilled individuals.
