Computer Studies

We offer Computer Science courses where the focus is learning programming languages, developing algorithms, problem-solving and the utilization of a variety of application software tools for a variety of purposes. Depending on students’ interests, our programs prepare our students to take a variety of paths including University, College and workplace. For students who take the courses for general interest, would benefit from the computing and application skills that they would be developing that could be applied in a variety of subject areas, the problem-solving skills they would be acquiring when developing and using digital technologies and the appreciation they would develop towards this subject area of computing.

We also offer several co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities such as: Computer Club (after school), Contest Participation at local, provincial and National levels, field trips and guest speakers.

Opportunities 

Computer Club:

  • Meets every Thursday in room 224 from 3:30 – 4:30,  to learn about Programming, Game Development, Problem-solving, Hardware, Web Design, Leadership Development and for Contest Preparation
  • Organizes and runs events in the school for a variety of purposes, which includes the following: learn programming languages and algorithms, programming contests , Hour of Code, Gaming Contests (Team and Individual), Charity events, etc.)

Contests Students Take Part in:

  • Beaver Computing Challenge (Grades 9 -10)
  • Canadian Computing Contest (Grades 9 - 12) administered by University of Waterloo
  • York Region District School Board’s Programming Contest
  • ECOO Contests
  • Club run contests

Field Trips 

  • Field Trips to Universities, Software Developing Companies and other establishments with relevant curriculum connections
